NdW 07|17: Bowmore, Puni, Belgian Owl und Wemyss mit SCR

Diese Woche haben mich einige Ankündigungen erreicht. Bowmore bringt nicht nur einen neuen No. 1 Einsteigerwhisky heraus sondern stellt das gesamte Kernsortiment optisch um. Kirsch Whisky hat zwei neue „Exoten“ als Importeur aufgenommen: die italienische Puni und die Belgian Owl. Und Wemyss hat die erste Single Cask Range für 2017 ins Rennen geschickt, acht Abfüllungen von 14 bis 28 Jahren und von 70.- bis 270.- GBP.

Der Belgian Owl ist 3 Jahre in First Fill Ex Bourbon Cask der Heaven Hill Brennerei gereift, und hat laut Angabe des Importeurs Kirsch Whisky Noten von Apfel, Birne und Banane.

Puni

Puni wird ab sofort ebenfalls von Kirsch Whisky importiert und in Deutschland an den Einzelhandel vertrieben. Aktuell sind die drei im Sortiment:

• Puni Nova Batch No. 02 (2016), 3 Jahre gereift in amerikanischen und europäischen Eichenfässern, Noten von Honig | Banane | Vanille
• Puni Alba Batch No. 02 (2016), 3 Jahre gereift in sizilianischen Marsalafässern + Finish in Ex-Islayfässern, Noten von Dunklen Früchten | Torf | Gewürznelken
• Puni Nero Limited Edition (2016), 43%, Limitiert auf 3000 Fl., 3 Jahre gereift in Pinot Nero Weinfässern aus Süd-Tirol, Noten von Pflaumen | Wilden Beeren | Orangenzesten

Den Nova und Alba habe ich bereits zum Erscheinen auf dem deutschen Markt 2015 (das Batch #02 2015) probiert: Puni – erster italienischer Single Malt Whisky.

Wemyss

Alle diese Single Cask Abfüllungen hat Charles MacLean für Wemyss beschrieben und ihnen auch die beschreibenden Namen gegeben. Hier die originalen Tasting Notes und Zusatzinfos.

Und kleiner Tipp: ich könnte mir vorstellen, dass Ihr die eine oder andere dieser Abfüllungen bei Alba Import auf der Hanse Spirit am Wochenende finden und probieren könnt.

Bunnahabhain, “The Ship’s Decanter”, 1991/2016, 24yo, CS, 45.6%, 162 Flaschen

• Colour: Polished Mahogany
• Nose:  The captain’s dining table, carved from dark mahogany is lit by ornate candelabras dripping with hot wax. Whilst the ships decanter rocks gently back and forth, emitting an aroma of rich fortified wine.
• Palate: A red berry and sherry sauce made of raisins, cranberries and rowanberries poured over venison loin. Huge and big bodied with an oily palate.
• Finish: Only in the finish, after a wave of cinder toffee and rich honey does a mild maritime note reveal its west coast origin.

Bunnahabhain, “Scallop Divers Dram”, 1987/2016, 28yo, 46%, 700 Flaschen

• Colour: Olive Oil
• Nose: An immediate sea breeze and ozone freshness upon the first investigation of this mild yet maritime dram. Mild crème Chantilly over butter scallops developing into sweet vanilla and sugar coated cashew nuts. With water the nose sweetens up with marshmallow and foam shrimp sweeties.
• Palate: Intense sweetness and mild biscuit notes like candy sticks, pink wafer biscuit and perhaps raspberry ice-cream that deepens and expands, with a mild acidity and salinity, like honey drenched scallop sauce. Years in the barrel has refined the mouthfeel into a light and mellow viscosity with absolutely no bit or spice.
• Finish: Soft, mild and gentle.

Clynelish, “Peppered Biltong”, 1995/2016, 20yo, 46%, 303 Flaschen

• Colour: Pale Straw
• Nose:  Like walking into a saddle maker’s workshop. Masculine aromas of tanned leather, straw, fresh sawdust, hessians sacks and waxed aprons intermingle with salami and peppered biltong.
• Palate: Viscous legs that hug the side of the glass let you know you’re in for the waxy mouthfeel expected from this Highland Northern distillery. The flavours are much softer than the nose would imply; banana scattered over creamy porridge, sweet custard and crystalized ginger.
• Finish: Hints of salty and sweet pinhead oatcakes.

Braeval, “Mango Anise Sorbet”, 1994/2016, 21yo, 46%, 254 Flaschen

• Colour: Light Honey
• Nose: Honey coated puff pastry served with peaches, apricots and a glass of dessert wine. A lively undernote of buttercups and green twigs keeps this dram bright and animated. With water cracked black pepper on strawberries.
• Palate: A lovely exotic fruit character with crunchy pastry notes like a buttery strudel filled with Mangos, Anise and ginger. Perhaps the edges of the pastry are a little burnt. With water the vanilla flavours provided by the cask expand into custard cream biscuits. Light to medium body with a drying ginger nut spice.
• Finish: Drying like a rice cracker or rye with  floral hints and a ginger ale spice.

Craigellachie, “Spiced Apple Strudel”, 2002/2016, 14yo, 46%, 362 Flaschen

• Colour: Bright Gold
• Nose: Bright and fresh like the first burst of aroma from peeling a waxy apple. Intensifying into syrupy juice gently spiced with cinnamon and nutmeg. With water pastry notes and richer fruit develop, think apple strudel, filled with raisins hot out of the oven.
• Palate: A tinned fruit of apples, pears and peaches stewed in its own syrup and served with thick double cream. Heavy bodied, rounded and perfectly composed.
• Finish: A medium finish with warming fennel spices, orange rind and peaches. Delicious!

Bladnoch, “Apple Syllabub”, 1990/2016, 26yo, 46%, 196 Flaschen

• Colour: Bright Gold
• Nose: Heady floral notes of honeysuckle and jasmine leading into freshly peeled lychees. Hints of coconut oil and luxury hand cream (perhaps mango scented?)
• Palate: The initial notes of vanilla and toffee develop in complexity and unleash a Sylabub of papaya, lychee and mango juice with a white wine like freshness and acidity.
• Finish: Fresh, juicy and clean like crunching into a pink lady apple.

Invergordon, “Tiramisu Layers”, 1997/2016, 19yo, Grain, 46%, 369 Flaschen

• Colour: Demerara Sugar
• Nose: Bold, intense and woody. Sawdust and fresh oak lead into the corn syrup sweetness that can be found in many a grain whisky. Here it is accompanied by cocoa powder and dark malt character.
• Palate: Dark chocolate powder, nutmeg spice with rich coffee notes. Biscuit sweet and cooling like chilled double cream or a chocolate mousse. Each layer of flavour works in perfect harmony like an elegant Tiramisu.
• Finish: This single grain lingers like sweetened espresso macchiato after dessert.

Glenrothes, “Hedgerow Berries”, 1996/2016, 20yo, 46%, 353 Flaschen

• Colour: Golden Syrup
• Nose: Fruity red berry blast straight from the glass! Brambles, raspberries and wild Scottish strawberries (they have a fragrant citrus tang for those in the know). Once we recovered from the intense berry aromas, woody notes like old twigs or a forest floor began to emerge.
• Palate: Sweet and fruity like a red berry compote containing all the hedgerow berries found in the nose. The sweet is balanced with a spicy oak character and malty cereal base, perhaps even chocolate coated cereal.
• Finish: Tingles on the tongue, woody and deep.
