Tasting: SMWS Oktober Outturn – 64.80|9.111|46.40|93.69|10.98

Bei einem Pre-Tasting am Donnerstag durfte ich schon mal rein schnuppern. Jetzt nehme ich mir die fünf Abfüllungen der Scotch Malt Whisky Society (SMWS) in Ruhe vor. Ich bin gespannt, denn das Nosing war bereits sehr interessant. Leider sind zwei der Abfüllungen bereits kurz nach Verkaufsstart seit Freitag ausverkauft.

Das sind die fünf, die vorgestellt wurden:

• 64.80, FRUIT PUNCH EXPLOSION, 9yo, 58.2%, 234 Flaschen, 49.80 GBP – Mannochmore
• 9.111, VIGOROUS AND SOPHISTICATED, 20yo, 61.3%, 186 Flaschen, 80.20 GBP – Glen Grant
• 46.40, SWEET, FRUITY AND AROMATIC, 23yo, 54.5%, 264 Flaschen, 100.10 GBP – Glenlossie
• 93.69, PROPS FOR A HAMMER FILM, 14yo, 59.5%, 564 Flaschen, 62.40 GBP – Glen Scotia (ausverkauft)
• 10.98, SUPER SMOKY FIRESTARTER, 8yo, 60.4%, 168 Flaschen, 58.80 GBP – Bunnahabhain (ausverkauft)

Alle ohne Kältefiltration und ohne Farbe sowie als Einzelfass (Single Cask) und in Fassstärke (Cask Strength). Die originalen Notes sind zwar nicht immer nachvollziehbar (ich weiß nicht, wie ein Hawai Shirt schmeckt) aber schön geschrieben. Und auch die „Drinking Tips“ gefallen mir.

Tasting Notes – 64.80, FRUIT PUNCH EXPLOSION

Take cover! On first nose we were dodging exploding tropical fruits from all angles. Pineapples, mangoes and guava. “Someone forgot to put the lid on the blender…” said one panellist. This was a real sunshine dram, with all of the vibrant colours of a tasteful Hawaiian shirt. On tasting neat we were leaving on a jet plane. Some were on a beach holiday with coconut suntan oil and ice cream cones. Others perched at the pool bar drinking piña coladas or banana milkshakes. The tropical character was maintained with water but everything was more silky and sweet. Balance was achieved on the palate with subtle spice and a drying oaky finish.

DRINKING TIP: A shorts and t-shirt dram

Meine Notes

• Nase: Eine echte Fruchtexplosion. Und auch das Kokosnussöl kann ich nachvollziehen. Die Ananas und Mangos lassen ebenfalls nicht lange auf sich warten. Begleitet von einer nur leichten Alkoholnote ist der sehr angenehm an der Nase. Dann findet auch die Vanille ihren Weg durch die süßen Fruchtnoten. Schwenkt man das Glas übernimmt erst Mal (wieder) der Alkohol die Vorherrschaft, aber abgedeckt ein wenig stehen lassen sind sie wieder da, verlieren mit der Zeit ein wenig an Süße.
• Geschmack: Leichtes Kribbeln auf der Zunge aber auch hier ist sofort süße Frucht am Start. Überwiegend in Richtung Mango mit leichter Pfeffernote.
• Abgang: Ein wenig Orangenschale und dann kommt ein trockener Abgang mit grüner (unreifer) Haselnuss.

Ich weiß nicht, wo der die ganze Frucht hergenommen hat, denn das war ein First Fill Ex-Bourbon Cask. Mannochmore findet man sehr selten als Abfüllungen. Ein schönes Fass, dass mir trotz der jugendlichen neun Jahre gut gefallen hat.

Tasting Notes – 9.111, VIGOROUS AND SOPHISTICATED

The aromas neat gave us the impression of a calm and self-assured personality. Mixed dried fruits, candied ginger, dark bitter chocolate and this overall scent of sweet, spiced wood combined with some earthy notes best described as the unique atmosphere in an old fashioned dunnage warehouse. The taste neat had lots of spice but also fruity and zesty flavours like a passion fruit and lime tart. With water plenty of orange aromas appeared; freshly juiced, sherbet, candied and zest with a hint of menthol tobacco. The taste now was well balanced between youthful vigour and the sophistication that comes with age.

DRINKING TIP: Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don’t mind it doesn’t matter

Meine Notes

• Nase: Trockenfrüchte und ein in Zartbitter-Schokolade eingehülltes Ingwerstäbchen. Hinter der Frucht verstecken sich Gewürze. Ein wenig Zimt und Nelke. Wenn ich die Augen zumache, lande ich hier wirklich in einem alten Dunnage Warehouse. Mit der Zeit (und mehr Schwenks im Glas) übernehmen die Gewürze und die Früchte treten zurück. Ein roter Apfel macht sich bemerkbar. Mit Wasser kommt erst Mal der Alkohol hervor. Dann übernimmt die Schokolade mit dem Ingwer, um anschließend einer schönen Karamellnote Platz zu machen. Nachdem die verschwindet übernehmen wieder die Gewürze.
• Geschmack: Gewürze und prickeln auf der Zunge. Mit Geduld stellt sich die erwartete Öligkeit ein. Mit Frucht. Orangenschalen. Mit Wasser etwas süßer aber dafür mit Ingwerschärfe.
• Abgang: Jetzt ist der Ingwer dran – ganz ohne Schokolade. Dazu gesellt sich eine herbe Fruchtigkeit. Grapefruit?

Der ist richtig schön rund und bietet immer wieder Neues zu entdecken. Glen Grant tut es richtig gut, mit Fassstärke anzutreten. Nicht so „weich gespült“ wie er für seinen Hauptmarkt Italien gerne verkauft wird (häufig zum Mixen). Der ist eine ganz andere Hausnummer. Mit seinen 20 Jahren hat der noch über 61%, der hat also den Engeln nicht viel abgegeben.

Tasting Notes – 46.40, SWEET, FRUITY AND AROMATIC

We found wholesome sweetness on the nose – toffee, Rice Krispie bars, honeycomb, shortbread, caramel wafers and boiled sweets – but made interesting by waxed jackets, fabric softened woollens and hints of tropical fruits. The unreduced palate was sweet, fruity and pleasant, with merest smudges of acidity and wood tannins – our panellists found toffee apples, orange fondant, peach melba, dried fruits, Moffat toffees and sugar-glazed donuts. The reduced nose seemed even more aromatic – pears cooked in honey, apple strudel, pot-pourri, figs, melons and lilies. The palate was now sweetness tempered by acceptable tartness – apple flapjacks, Baklava and spun sugar – very easy to drink.

DRINKING TIP: Could be a very attractive welcome dram.

Meine Notes

• Nase: Fruchtige Noten. Butter-Toffee. Sehr würzig. Fleischige Malzigkeit. Parfümierte Noten. Apfel.
• Geschmack: Pfeffer und Chilli. Schöne Fruchtnoten. Mango.
• Abgang: Die Pfefferschärfe hält an und hat einen süßen Abgang.

Der ist nicht so komplex hat aber eine sehr schöne süße und ausgeglichene Fruchtnote.

Tasting Notes – 93.69, PROPS FOR A HAMMER FILM

The nose starts with dried dates and figs, polished wood, leather and hand-made Iranian carpets (a Middle Eastern market?) – Eventually finding other fruits (apricots, stewed plums, baked apple) and sweet coconut (like Peshawari naan) – definitely Eastern, exotic and alluring. The palate combines deep sweetness (malt extract, syrup of figs, muscovado) with lots of wood, spice cupboard warmth (turmeric, garam masala), tree-bark and eucalyptus. The reduced nose finds black rococo tulips, liquorice, leather and Fernet Branca (props for a Hammer film perhaps). The palate has manuka honey, black tea, All-bran and Demerara crunch – now sweeter and lip-smackingly more-ish – a serendipitous discovery.

DRINKING TIP: After dinner with espresso or when needing a laxative.

Meine Notes

• Nase: Datteln und Feigen, tropische Früchte. Ledernoten (Ohrensessel?) und Holzpolitur. Datteln im Speckmantel.
• Geschmack: Tropisches Fruchtbonbon. Würzig. Süßer Sirup gemischt mit Eukalyptus.
• Abgang: Leichte Holznote. Dann kommt Karamell.

Auch das ist ein schöner Malt.

Tasting Notes – 10.98, SUPER SMOKY FIRESTARTER

This is a young Firestarter of a dram! The initial nose was super smoky, sweet and salty. Delicate bourbon notes managed to shine through despite the intensity of the smoke. There was also a curious mix of smoked fish, white chocolate and ash. The taste was that of a coastal bonfire, those who gathered around enjoyed smoked monkey nuts and tuna nori rolls. Water lit a barbecue, fuelled by charcoal and hickory and very occasionally smattered with sea spray. On the palate the sweetness had really intensified and we found flavours of smoked apple, ham hock and heavy, thick, grey smoke.

DRINKING TIP: Brace yourself!

Meine Notes

• Nase: Speckiger Rauch. Die Küste ist im Glas mit salziger Meeresluft und geräuchertem Fisch. Ich bin mitten auf Islay.
• Geschmack: Prickeln und Pfefferschärfe. Dann kommt eine malzige Süße. Vanille. BBQ und Lagerfeuer.
• Abgang: Eine Chilischote mit Ananas.

Der ist jung und knackig, aber für seine acht Jahre ein schöner Islay Dram.
