Tasting: 3x Edinburgh Whisky

Vor Kurzem habe ich über den unabhängigen Abfüller Edinburgh Whisky berichtet. Gordon Watt, einer der beiden Direktoren, hat mir nicht nur meine Fragen beantwortet sondern auch drei Proben gesendet. Und die schaue ich mir jetzt genauer an.

Offizielle Notes

• COLOUR: Bright old gold
• NOSE: Warm honey and spices – nutmeg and powdered ginger – link with ripe pear, candied citrus fruits and Seville orange marmalade. Lightly toasted malt and oat notes develop into sugared almonds and ginger snaps. The wonderfully sweet fruit becomes more tropical and floral notes appear, before the sweetness returns as aromatic white chocolate.
• TASTE: Mouth-wateringly rich citrus in balance with warm acacia honey. Gets the juices flowing. The citrus, honey and floral notes are constantly swirling around each other. Lovely sweet acidity, with a nuttiness – almost like baklava. Smooth and coating with a notably long finish.
• IMPRESSION: Really elegant pure Speyside malt blend, full of interest and reasons to return. Complexity without heaviness. Refreshing and genuinely very moreish.

Gordon: „After a busy day the lightly sherried New Town Advocates Batch blended malt is the perfect start to an evening.“

Meine Notes

• Nase: Zitrone, Honig und eine leichte Muskatnote. Die süß ummantelten Ingwer-Sticks kommen mir in den Sinn, wenn ich länger daran rieche. Von Sherry merke ich nicht viel, maximal eine dezente Fruchtnote. Aber er ist komplexer als ich angenommen habe, denn nach einiger Zeit im Glas öffnet sich ein neues Aromenspektrum. Ein wenig malziger und klarer.
• Geschmack: Sehr malzig. Süßer Ingwer. Zitrusnote. Honig. Mein letztes Baklava war deutlich süßer, vielleicht bekomme ich deshalb diese Assoziation nicht. Auch vom Sherry hätte ich mehr erwartet.
• Abgang: Das leichte Ziehen geht einher mit einer Ingwernote im Abgang.

OM3

Offizielle Notes

• COLOUR: Mid-gold with copper tones.
• NOSE: Salted caramel. Iodine. Charred embers – still smoking. Gets richer and deeper
  – sandalwood, tobacco, muscovado, toasted marshmallows and black cherries. Lifting
  hints of ginger and orange peel. Then lush thick smoke again – a beach bonfire basically.
• TASTE: Very creamy, with a defining sweetness. Vanilla / crème caramel. Hazelnuts.
  Sugared almonds. Pink peppercorns. All playing with the heady peat smoke.
• FINISH: Oily. Soft. Warming dense peat smoke, with balancing freshness. A lush
  lingering sweetness, and ever-changing smokiness. Keeps playing into the night…

Gordon: „When I come back from walking in the hills the peated New Town Surgeons batch keeps the memories of the fresh air and pine forests going.“

Meine Notes

• Nase: Schöner, sanfter Rauch. Nach einiger Zeit finde ich auch das salzige Karamell. Der ändert sich mit der Zeit. Den Ingwer finde ich und auch die Orangenschale. Litschi.
• Geschmack: Schön süß, Vanille und Crème Karamell eingebunden im Rauch.
• Abgang: Leichte Frische und viel Rauch. Der Ingwer blitzt noch ein wenig durch.

Ardmore

Offizielle Notes

• COLOUR: Mid gold.
• NOSE: Initially, like a doctor’s surgery in the ‘70’s – iodine, bandages, carbolic – then more complex, menthol and aromatic. The medicinal morphs into meaty – like a bad Tarrantino movie – old butcher’s block and heavily smoked ham. Salty. Intriguing smokiness intensifies – peat fire embers and newly snuffed out candles (with warm wax). Fresh walnuts.
• PALATE: Smooth, oily texture. More warming peat than medicinal now. Rich,savoury/sweet, juicy-fruit. Lush bourbon vanilla wraps around the smoke. Light spice. Hint of rubber. Caraway seed. Smoked German sausages anyone?
• FINISH: Great interplay of the smoky, savoury and the buttery. Rich, thick and aromatic. Long heather honey finish.

Gordon: „When I meet with good friends who appreciate fine things then it has to be one of The Library Collection single cask bottlings to spark conversation.“

Meine Notes

• Nase: Hinter diesem jodhaltigem, salzigen Geruch hätte ich nie und nimmer einen Ardmore vermutet. Vielleicht eher in Richtung Laphroaig, aber eben nicht ganz so heftig. Die Original Tasting Notes treffen es ganz gut. Vor allem den fleischigen Rauch hat man recht schnell in der Nase. Bei mir dreht er nach einiger Zeit in eine leicht süßliche Richtung. Ein wenig Ingwer. Richtig schön rund und gefällig.
• Geschmack: Ganz anders als in der Nase. Das medizinische ist komplett weg. Malzige Süße mit einem gerade angezündetem Feuer in dem gerade erst die Spähne glühen. Die Vanille des Ex-Bourbon Fasses mischt sich jetzt ein. Gewürze und ein wenig Gummi.
• Abgang: Jetzt übernehmen die Gewürze. Ein buntes Spektrum mit Rauch durchsetzt erzeugt erst leichtes Kribbeln um dann noch lange anzuhalten.

Fazit

Ich habe den Peated New Town Blend natürlich ans Ende meines Tastings gestellt, damit ich den leicht getorften Ardmore besser wahrnehmen kann. Aber der Ardmore war kräftiger und vor allem medizinischer. Der hat mir sehr gut gefallen. Als Allday-Peaty-Dram macht sich der  Surgeons Ball ganz hervorragend. Wenn auch nicht so komplex wie der Ardmore.
