Tasting: 4x Octomore Dialogos im Vergleich

Seit Januar ist auch der vierte im Bunde verfügbar und ich habe mir von der Hanse Spirit alle vier Proben mitgenommen. Bei allen vieren gibt es leichte Variationen in der Herstellung – merkt man das? Ich bin gespannt und vergleiche die vier miteinander.

Tasting Notes

09.1 – The Control

Offizielle Notes

• CHARACTER – Refined, sleek, confident in its youth. Older than its years.
• AROMA – Smoke and oak, intense sweetness from the cask, vanilla, cinder toffee. The smoke is thick, velvety and vegetal, peat and earthy.
• TASTE – Soft on the palate- no aggression, nutty, fudge, nougat, delicate coconut and rose petal floral.
• FINISH – Long peat finish, hints of treacle, warm sand/salt.

Meine Notes

• Nase: Schöner speckiger Rauch. Ein wenig Malz kann durchdringen. Ingwer. Traubenzucker mit Beerengeschmack.
• Geschmack: Süß, dann kommt das Prickeln auf der Zunge. Danach macht sich ein wenig Schokolade breit. Trauben.
• Abgang: Nun kommt die Süße zurück. Geht über in nussige Eiche.

09.2 – The Independent Variable

Offizielle Notes

• CHARACTER – All about the fruit and oak from the margaux, a totally different dimension to the 9.1 based on one year in the red wine casks. As it opens out there is more and more fruit, cherry, plum, strawberry. This is going to be legendary in years to come.
• AROMA – Smoked Jam, blackcurrant, cherry, almond. The smoke is earthy, coffee grounds, oak and vanilla all mixed and always there is fruity strawberry/blackcurranty jam.
• TASTE – Dark and complex on the palate, dark cherry, earthy smoke, bitter coffee. Ripe plums and pipe tobacco.
• FINISH – Spice comes through, earthy, peppery, smoke as ever comes through strong on the palate.

Meine Notes

• Nase: Weniger Rauch (oder ich habe mich daran gewöhnt), dafür süßer und Trester. 
• Geschmack: Ähnlich wie der 09.1 kommt erst Süße und dann das Prickeln auf der Zunge. Malz und Schokolade. Auch hier eine leichte Traubennote.
• Abgang: Ähnlich wie der 09.1 kommt eine nussige Eiche 

09.3 – Naturalistic Observation

• CHARACTER – Wild, Ileach, if this whisky could speak it would only speak in Gaelic. Atlantic coast raised. Out on the edge, the sense of place is strong.
• AROMA – Malted barley, Horlicks, the smell of the mash going into the mashtun. Heather wildfire, black tea, golden syrup, lemon sponge.
• TASTE – Golden syrup in the tin, smoked tea, wort, malted barley, pear, peach melba. Sea spray, heather flowers.
• FINISH – Smoke, toasted oak, rye bread, salt, ozone.

Meine Notes

• Nase: Der ist anders als die ersten beiden. Rauch und ein wenig schärfer an der Nase. Stroh und Malz in der Nase. Schwarzer Tee.
• Geschmack: Auch hier erst süß und dann noch kräftigeres Prickeln. Die fast 63% merkt man. Er wird mit der Zeit zähflüssig im Mund wie die anderen beiden. Dieses Stroh-/Malzgemisch finde ich hier auch, aber mit einer zusätzlichen fruchtigen Note.
• Abgang: Karamell und Malz. Die Zunge ist jetzt ein wenig taub.

09.4 – The Outlier

Offizielle Notes

• CHARACTER – A dram of depth and worth taking some time to get to know. Greater than the sum of its parts and the parts that combine to make it have an individual story of their own.
• AROMA – There is a richness, chocolate, tobacco, bonfire smoke, leather. Vanilla custard, blueberry dry straw and pear drops.
• TASTE – Warming, spicy – mulled wine. Leather and tobacco, malt sugar, icing sugar. All wrapped in earthy peaty smoke. Dry on the palate.
• FINISH – Oak driven, coconut, tobacco, vanilla, then smoke. In balance the time in the cask has calmed the smoke, both through the phenols lowering naturally over time and the influence of the oak becoming greater.

Meine Notes

• Nase: Deutlich anders als die anderen drei. Etwas rauchiger. Etwas gediegener und erwachsener.
• Geschmack: Der reiht sich mit den anderen dreien ein – erst süß, dann ein Prickeln. Sanfter. Fruchtiger. Malziger.
• Abgang: Angenehm trocken. Fruchtig. Viel Rauch.

Fazit

Trotz der Verwendung von Bordeaux-Fässern habe ich bei den ersten beiden keinen großen Unterschied festgestellt. Ich muss aber darauf hinweisen, dass ich persönlich bei viel Rauch wenig andere Aromen wahrnehme. Vor allem diese zu benennen fällt mir bei Torf-/Rauchbomben sehr schwer. Die 09.3 ist deutlich anders, aber auch mit 62.9% ganz schön alkoholisch. Am Besten hat mir der 10-jährige gefallen. Schön rund und gediegen. Ein sehr gelungener Octomore. Alle vier haben ein paar Gemeinsamkeiten: viel Rauch (den man teilweise gar nicht so deutlich merkt), hohen Alkoholgehalt und leider sind sie auch alle drei nicht ganz günstig. Die zehnte Serie ist bereits bei der TTB aufgetaucht – ich bin schon gespannt.
